New Programs Add Excitement to Camp
 |
by Russell R. Grundke, Executive Director |
Campers experienced a wonderful new program this summer. The Hiram House “Double H Ranch” opened and horseback riding returned after an absence of seventeen years. This western horseback riding program was loved by the campers and well received by adults. During the coming months the riding program will be reviewed and evaluated. The expansion of this program is expected to accommodate more campers next summer and will be offered to local community centers and organizations in the “off” season.
The “Double H Ranch” was dedicated on May 31st. This gala benefit and dedication was in honor of Billie Steffee and her support of this project. Over $76,000 was raised at this dedication to purchase the needed riding equipment to make the “Double H Ranch” a reality. I would like to personally thank Billie Steffee, the Gala Benefit Committee and the many sponsors and supporters of this event. Without their support this program would still be a dream.
We are now looking forward to Fall School Camp and the Pumpkin Festival. School Camp starts right after Labor Day through October. The Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 12th.
Hiram House will be introducing a Climbing Wall in September. This new adventure-challenge program will begin during August and be ready for the Fall School Camp programs. It adds an exciting element to the continuing expansion of Hiram House’s facilities and programs.

New Climbing Wall Built for
Camp’s Adventure Program
CVS Awards Hiram House“Get Fit Challenge” Grant
Hiram House is building a new 35-foot Climbing Wall, similar to those pictured , as part of the Camp’s Adventure and Challenge Program.
Hiram House Camp was awarded a $5,000 “Get Fit Challenge” Grant from CVS/ Pharmacy as part of a $100,000 grant initiative for non-profit organizations launched by the company to support health and fitness programs in the Greater Cleveland area.
The funds are being used to construct a new 35-foot Climbing Wall at camp that will be part of Hiram House’s Adventure and Challenge Program.
Thousands of children, ages 6-18, from throughout Northeast Ohio will use the new facility during a variety of Summer Camps, School Camps and Youth Group Retreats. The Climbing Wall will provide youth with fitness opportunities to make positive choices and gain self-confidence.
Hiram House Executive Director Russell Grundke said, “The Climbing Wall empowers youth to experience and put into practice leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills. The physical, mental, and emotional tasks they accomplish will help to create a positive self-image that benefits them throughout life.” He added, “We are most grateful to CVS/Pharmacy for their support of Hiram House and our work with youth.”
Hiram House began construction on the project this summer for use in the fall. Total completion cost is $15,000. An additional $10,000 has been raised to date from the Storer Foundation and Cleveland corporate sector. To donate or for more information, contact the camp at (216)831-5045.

“We’re Back in the Saddle Again!”
Equestrian Center Gala a Great Success!
~ Horseback Riding Now Open at New “Double H Ranch” ~ | |

|
|
The first group of campers were “Back in the Saddle Again” this summer at the new “Double H Ranch” at Hiram House. The Camp kicked-off the summer season by opening the stable doors of its new Equestrian Center, set amidst some fifteen wooded acres of the scenic 172-acre campgrounds.
Western Horseback Riding Programs were available for Summer Day and Summer Resident Campers, plus two new, week-long Riding Programs for area youth, ages 6-17 years, held in August. Riding Programs will also be offered to school groups and community organizations, beginning this fall.
The new Equestrian Center has a 9,700 square foot indoor riding arena, a 4,500 square foot stable (with eleven box stalls for horses), turnout pastures and an outdoor riding ring. Thousands of children from Greater Cleveland and northeast Ohio will use the Horseback Riding Program annually through Hiram House’s Summer Camps, School Camps, Youth Retreat Groups, Outdoor Education and Adventure Programs.
Campers receive instruction from trained specialists in ring riding and in basic horse care. They learn how to groom, approach, saddle and bridle, properly ride and care for their horses. Stable chores (feeding, stall mucking, tack care) are also part of the daily lessons.
“Horseback Riding is one of the most popular activities at camp according to our campers and staff,” said Executive Director Russell R. Grundke. “We are delighted to once again offer it as part of our program.” He cited studies that show how the relationship between youth and animals, especially horses, fosters a sense of responsibility, trust and self-esteem.
Grundke added, “We are most grateful to Billie Howland Steffee, The Cleveland Foundation, and to all our supporters in business and the community for making it possible for children to benefit from this worthwhile program.”
The new facility was dedicated during ceremonies at a Gala Benefit, hosted by Hiram House, on May 31. Funding to build the Equestrian Center was donated by the Billie Howland Steffee Family Fund of
The Cleveland Foundation. Steffee, a
resident of Novelty, was the guest of honor. Some 250 supporters from throughout the Chagrin Valley and Northeast Ohio attended the event and more than $76, 000 was raised to equip the new Equestrian Center and the western horseback riding program.
The Benefit featured a festive evening of entertainment, with the sounds of bluegrass, jazz, folk and swing music by “The Silver Strings”, cocktails and dinner by Trifles Café and Catering of Chagrin Falls, a live auction conducted by Dave Rennolds, of Rennolds Realty & Auctioneers in Middlefield, for the naming rights for the horse stalls and rooms, the raffle of a diamond horseshoe necklace and ring donated by Robert & Gabriel Jewelers of Lyndhurst.
Auction items were donated by area businesses and individuals and included a variety of goods and services, such as a “Dude Ranch” Get-a-Way, a Jacob’s Field Loge, plus sports, dining and entertainment packages, as well as riding equipment to outfit the new Equestrian Center provided by Schneider’s Saddlery & Western Wear in Chagrin Falls.
