4th New Log Cabin Now Under Construction at Hiram House

The 4th New Log Cabin at Hiram House Camp is now under construction in Pioneer Circle and will open in time for the 2013 Spring/Summer season.
Set in the heart of the 172 acre camp, the structure will be available year-round for use by Summer Camps, School Camps and Group Retreats.
The 4,300 sq.ft. all-weather Cabin will feature a central Great Room for meeting or instruction space, overnight Lodging for up to 30 campers and supervisory staff, a screened sun porch, restrooms and foyer. It will have handicapped access and offer state of the art fire and safety systems.
The new Cabin was made possible thanks to generous grants from The Eva L. & Joseph M. Bruening Foundation, The Louise H. & David S. Ingalls Foundation, The Abington Foundation, & other individual donors. Our sincere appreciation to all!
The new Cabin is part of the Hiram House Master Plan & Capital Campaign to revitalize the camp’s facilties. Other new additions in recent years have included the High Ropes, Challenge & Obstacle Course, & the Farmstead Barn, among others. (see more Facility improvements below in this issue)

New Facilities Enhance Camp Thanks to Group Efforts

GE/United Way, U.S. Marines, L'Oreal USA Hold Volunteer Days
Hiram House benefited tremendously this year from the welcome addition of several new and improved facilities at camp, thanks to the dedicated efforts of teams of volunteer groups during the spring and summer months.
Hundreds of tireless volunteers arrived at camp during General Electric/United Way Global Community Day in April, the United States Marine Day and L’Oreal USA Day in June. Each group donated their time and talents to build a variety of new structures, renovate others, paint, landscape, install tiles and flooring, construct fences, groom trails, and much more.
Among dozens of new projects completed were the Low Ropes Challenge & Obstacle Course at the Adventure Center, several covered Picnic Pavilions with Tables, a new Greenhouse at the Farmstead, a Firepit at the Fort, new Basketball Courts, Animal Pens and staining on the newly-built Barn at the Farmstead, to name just a few. Needless to say, they were all a great hit with our campers, staff and visitors. Many thanks to everyone for their help!

Volunteers in the Spotlight - Hat's Off to Sara Freeman
- 25 Years of Haunted Thrills at Pumpkin Festoval!

Hat's Off to Sara Freeman & All Our Volunteers!
Sara Freeman, a chemist at Ferro Corp., started volunteering 25 years ago at Pumpkin Festival as part of United Way Young Leaders. She spearheaded creating & decorating the Haunted Maze, and, over the years, she has expanded and improved it to be one of the most popular attractions at the event. Along with her friend, Diana Dusek, Sara spends countless hours each fall volunteering & working her magic to thrill & delight visitors, young & old.
Sara is a shining example of the many other Volunteer groups and hundreds of individuals whose selfless efforts help make the Pumpkin Festival possible and so successful each year. Volunteers help prepare the grounds, set up attractions, cook pancakes, grill foods, sell tickets, staff booths & activities, donate goods & services, & organize the event.
Volunteers this year included students from Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western, Reserve University, John Carroll University, Hiram College & University of Mount Union, Boy Scout Troop 383-Mentor, Giant Eagle, Hiram House Trustees, Lander Circle Kiwanis Club, Pumpkin Festival Committee, United Way Young Professionals. Kudos to All!
