Highlights 2008

by
Russell R. Grundke, Executive Director |
Hiram House had a successful 2008 season. Summer Day and Jr.
Day Camp registrations increased.
Horseback Riding & Adventure Camp
filled. Resident Camp welcomed fifty
new campers from Cleveland Mount
Pleasant Community Weed & Seed
Program, increasing that program.
In August, hundreds of Eaton
Corporation employees volunteered for
United Way Days of Caring. These two
days of volunteer work literally created
a “new” camp. Stairs and picnic tables
were built, inside and outside of camp
buildings were painted, fencing repaired
and stained, and grounds landscaped.
It was an honor working alongside so
many dedicated professionals.
Horse Around this summer was
well attended and a success. Pumpkin
Festival was the greatest in 37 years.
These two events are great assets to
our campership fund. On behalf of the
Board of Trustees, thanks to the staff
and numerous volunteers who made
these events so successful.
Hiram House was privileged to
host the Old Stone Foundation young
mothers retreat this fall. These single
parents had an opportunity to learn
about child rearing, problem solving and
coping with their own adulthood.
Hiram House is looking forward to
expansion, new challenging programs
and the excitement all this brings as
2008 winds down and 2009
peeks around the corner.

Hiram House Expands Young Adult Programs Partners with Old Stone Foundation for Group Retreat
Retreats Open to Adults & Teens Civic, Church, Business, School Groups
Hiram House Camp is now expanding
its outreach to provide more programming
for teenagers, at risk youth, and young adult
groups throughout Northeast Ohio.
This fall it partnered with the Old Stone
Foundation to host their two-day, overnight
Group Retreat for twenty young mothers and
pregnant teenagers, 16 to 25 years old, who
have not finished high school.
This new collaborative educational and
recreational program featured outdoor activities
supervised by camp staff, such as Climbing
Wall, Canoeing, Challenge, as well as special
evening programs and guest speakers offered
by Old Stone Foundation and other groups,
like Project Love.
The purpose of this innovative new Old
Stone Foundation program at camp was to
open new horizons for these young women in
a new environment, expose them to different
experiences and foster bonding, parenting and
life skills among them, said Marc Nathanson,
Executive Director.
The program was sponsored by the Ruth
& Elmer Babin Foundation, Lincoln Electric and
Rotary Club of Cleveland.
Old Stone Foundation also works with
Cleveland Schools to help young mothers
complete their education. For information visit
at: www.oldstonefoundation.org
Retreats are Open to Adults, Teens, and Youth Groups
Retreats at Hiram House Camp are also
available for Youth, Teens, and Adult Groups,
from late Summer through the Fall, Winter and
Spring months.
Retreats are offered either with or without
meal service or programming, on weekends
(in season) as well as weekdays (off season).
They can be a day-long adventure program, or
may include overnight stays of several days up
to a week, for group activities or meetings.
Camp facilities and programs include year
round Log Cabins, Dining Hall & Activity Center,
Climbing Wall, Canoeing, Archery, Challenge,
Hiking, and more (weather permitting). The 172
acre camp is beautiful in all seasons.
